Presentation by artist M. Morgan Warren to
His Royal Highness, the Prince Philip KG KT.
Government House, Victoria BC during the royal visit, September 1994.
Being English and feeling a connection
to the country where she spent her childhood, Ms. Warren contacted HRH
Prince Philip's representative, and offered a special painting in appreciation
of his long support of habitat conservation as her gift.
Imagine her surprise at receiving a telephone call from Prince Philip's
representative, informing her that she had been commanded to appear at
Government House and present her work to him personally.
As she entered Government House with her painting, a group of people rushed
past. "Who was that?" she asked. "That was Her
Majesty the Queen. This way, if you please."
During the private audience with
Prince Philip and his equerry Sir Brian McGrath, she learned that Philip
was well-informed about logging industry practices in British Columbia.
They discussed the BC government's conflict of interest in regulating logging
on the one hand, while at the same time receiving a fee for each tree that
is cut down.
At the end of the presentation
ceremony, Philip instructed Sir Brian to be sure the painting was transported
with the Prince's belongings, and to be certain to avoid having it become
mixed up with items belonging to the Queen.
Prince Philip was the founding
patron of the Brant Festival, a habitat conservation event which takes
place on Vancouver Island, British Columbia each year. Through his
efforts in England and abroad, several endangered species of geese have
been protected.
